I very much understand that nuclear weapons strategy is a thing of nuance. Or at least I hope that the field aspires to be a thing of nuance, because nuclear weapons themselves are actually somewhat unthinkable. As it stands, we don’t want to use the weapons we have and we don’t want other people to get them. The weapons we have are designed for deployment against people we are no longer that angry with or threatened by. That part I get. I also get that there are certain people out there who would like to get these weapons because they are angry at us and threatened by us.

Obama’s new strategy, if I am reading this right, is to tell the people who aspire to get nuclear weapons to use on us because they are angry at and threatened by us that they don’t need to get them because we promise not to use our weapons on them. Cross our hearts and hope to die. We double promise on our mother’s graves. No matter what the drool masters do to us, we will not nuke them. Therefore, they do not need nuclear weapons.

Hear that, Iran? Hear that, North Korea? You don’t need them. We’ve declared our weapons not viable against you, as long as you continue to use rocks and stones… or something.

Is this a non proliferation strategy or is this a punch line?

Is it my imagination or did this happen twice? Two days apart. One Cardinal said it during a defense of the current Pope on the day before Easter and another Cardinal said it during Easter services. Both times it was said in front of the Pope, while defending the Pope.

Am I senile or precognitive here? For some reason I don’t think I am the defective one here.

First, why defend the Pope in a speech to the Pope? Second, why slip in some advice to the laity when you are addressing the Pope? Third, why are two guys giving essentially the same speech?

Talk about having a tin ear all around.
